Are you wondering how to break into the modelling world? The first step is building your portfolio. It’s your first impression when applying to agencies or going after jobs.
What is a model portfolio?
A model portfolio (also known as a book) is a set of professional images that show how you look on camera and how versatile you are.
It should demonstrate:
- your natural appearance
- your ability to express different moods
- your potential across different styles (clean, editorial, commercial)
Agencies and clients need to see enough to understand your look and your potential.
How many photos do you need?
At the very minimum, you need:
• one headshot
• one full-length image
That’s the absolute baseline, just enough to show your face and proportions.

However, this is rarely enough to get noticed.
A more realistic starting portfolio would include:
• 6-8 images covering different angles and expressions

And ideally:
• 10-15 images showing a range of looks (natural, editorial, lifestyle)

What to avoid:
- heavy filters or over-editing
- too much makeup in every shot
- busy or distracting environments
Final thoughts
You don’t need to wait until everything is “perfect” to start.
A strong model portfolio is built step by step:
• start with clean, natural images
• add variety over time
• update as you gain experience
